The week of May 24–30, 2010 marked the sixth annual Recreational Water Illness (RWI) Prevention Week. This time of year is the ideal time to increase awareness of recreational water illnesses and healthy swimming practices in your community and reach out to public pool operators, beach managers, the media, residential pool owners, child care providers, and the public to initiate action.

This year’s RWI Prevention Week focused on pool inspections and the Triple A’s of Healthy Swimming (Awareness, Action, and Advocacy). Since August 2009, the Department of Health and Human Services had the privilege of collaborating with state and local partners on an analysis of 2008 pool inspection data for a Mortality and Morbidity Week Report (MMWR) to be published in May 2010. This article highlights violations in water chemistry, recirculation and filtration, and management, and is a follow-up to the popular 2002 pool inspection data MMWR. Both MMWRs highlight the importance of pool inspections and call for increased public health vigilance in overseeing pool code compliance.

HHS has been busy integrating the Healthy Swimming website (www.cdc.gov/healthyswimming) into CDC’s Healthy Water website (www.cdc.gov/healthywater). This change will allow individuals to access all water-related health information in one place. The integration of the Healthy Swimming content also includes updates that are designed to optimize usability and an attractive new site design. New resources for RWI Prevention Week 2010 included fact sheets for the public on Cryptosporidium,Giardia,Pseudomonas, Legionella, and MRSA. HHS received invaluable input from a few state and local partners on this effort and sincerely appreciate their help in making these fact sheets a useful resource for all of our partners. They would also like to bring your attention to our free English and Spanish-language brochures on Healthy Swimming behaviors and our poster on pool chemical safety. These items can be ordered on the Healthy Swimming website (www.cdc.gov/healthyswimming).

CDC’s Healthy Swimming Program is proud to continue the long-standing collaboration between epidemiologic and environmental health staff at the agency. Please let them know about the activities in your area that occurred related to RWI Prevention Week by sending emails to ehsb@cdc.gov.

The Community Health Assessment and Action Planning Collaborative involves 10 regional teams and one state team working together for about nine months to learn and test processes to develop community or state health profiles and action plans and to collectively share learning experiences. Participating teams have an opportunity to work in a collaborative mode with peers and with state and national experts. At the end of the collaborative, teams will have acquired expertise on how to plan for and conduct a community health assessment and how to develop a community health improvement plan. In addition, teams will have experience in using quality improvement tools in preparing for community health assessments and improvement plans. A goal of the learning collaborative is that from this experience, participants will be able to integrate quality improvement in their day-to-day public health activities. The Public Health Emergency Response (PHER) grant for H1N1 response activites will close on July 30, 2010. All funds must be expended by that time. The staff of the KDHE Bureau of Public Health Preparedness and your KALHD Preparedness Team have developed the following questions to ascertain the status of those funds. While we know that it is difficult to estimate the exact figures for some expenses, we ask that you answer to the best of your ability.

Immunize Kansas Kids is a project to increase timely childhood immunization, funded by the Kansas Health Foundation, sponsored by the Kansas Health Institute with assistance from KDHE and KALHD. One focus of this project is to assist local health departments' connection to the statewide KSWebIZ immunization registry for agencies currently using KIPHS/PHClinic or QS/Insight. Most of you have completed the connection process so you can exchange immunization information with the Registry. We'd like your feedback on the connection process, ease of use, current use and suggestions for additional modifications to help support your efforts to keep your clients healthy.

We've sent this survey to you so that you can choose the most appropriate staff members to complete the questions. Some may best be answered by you, some by the Immunization Program manager and some by those who use KIPHS/PHClinic or QS /Insight to enter Immunization information. We've noted which questions that we think might be best answered by the Administrator or Immunization Program manager.

Attached are copies of the questions so that you can review these, have someone assemble information to complete this survey in one session and submit for tabulation.
